This is based on a mere 30-second reflection, but it can lead to something powerful:
First, listen to what Sam Harris says in this Moment from the Waking Up app.
Then, bring to mind a memory from earlier today. It could be from any situation: maybe you were walking somewhere, or talking to someone, for example. Just recall it as you experienced it, meaning from your first-person perspective.
And then compare it to your current experience. Realize that even this very recent memory is a mere pale shadow compared to your experience of the present moment. Why would you choose to dwell on this weak ghost, when this brilliant moment is here right now?
You can do this brief exercise repeatedly. I’ve found this quite an accessible method for arriving in and appreciating the present moment, both while high, but also as I go about my day.
