A manifesto for those who want more out of their weed.
Many people who have had psychedelic experiences with substances like LSD, psilocybin, and DMT, recognize their potential for personal growth.
I believe that cannabis is no different. This simple plant offers vast life-improvement potential:
It can be a constructive and energizing force that fuels creativity and high performance in individuals, leading to greater professional success and societal impact.
It can encourage empathy and self-reflection, leading to wiser choices and closer relationships.
It can increase your enjoyment of the simple pleasures of life, such as exercise, food, nature, sex or even just doing the dishes.
And much more.
In short, it can enrich one’s life beyond measure.
But I believe that to unlock this tremendous potential, we need to be smart and mindful about how we use cannabis.
In other words, we need to employ strategies, principles and habits to amplify the most desirable effects for any given situation, while minimizing the least desirable ones. This is Smart Cannabis Use.
In practice, this means undertaking thinking exercises, guided meditations, one-person workshops, and so on. Examples of topics include setting a purpose for your high, observing your consciousness while high, and evoking gratitude while high.
Importantly, Smart Cannabis Use also requires adopting techniques for responsible cannabis use, such as tolerance breaks, pre-planned dosing progressions, budgeting, and fail-safe mechanisms to halt overuse.
Cannabis is a powerful drug, with its own negative effects and addiction pathways. That's why Smart Cannabis Use builds on this foundational component of addiction control and harm reduction. I believe that while complete abstinence may be the best approach for some people, many of us can find a balanced, enriching relationship with cannabis.
I believe Smart Cannabis Use also requires a strong mindfulness component. Many of the meditation ideas for Smart Cannabis Use stem from approaches such as Dzogchen and The Headless Way. But the sources of inspiration are varied, ranging from ancient rituals and my own experimentation, to reddit comments and Youtube videos. No stone left unturned and all that.
Though the exercises and meditations are usually intended to be performed while at least a little bit high, they are absolutely doable and valuable while sober too. The only difference is that especially for non-regular meditators, being high may make the exercises easier to grasp initially. And often when you’ve seen what’s possible high, it’s easier to revisit it sober too.
My dream is that through exploring and teaching these methods, Smart Cannabis Use will help many people to lead richer, more fulfilling lives. I hope and believe that this will also support wiser drug legislation, improve mental health on a societal level, and eventually help – in some small way – to solve the major challenges humanity faces right now.
